Suicide likely in death

A 51-year-old man died of an apparent suicide after Truckee police discovered his body Sunday afternoon about 150 yards from Interstate 80 near the new agricultural station, said Truckee Police Lt. Randy Fenn.

At 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Truckee police received a tip from a citizen who had stopped along the freeway and found the body of Stephens German of Campbell, Calif. in a wooded area near the Overland Trail exit, Fenn said.

German was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Fenn said. Investigators determined that a handgun, which was recovered at the scene, did belong to German, Fenn said.

“They are ruling it as suicide,” said Cathy Valceschini, Nevada County Chief Deputy Coroner.

German’s car was parked about 50 feet from where his body was found, Fenn said. Police did not find a note at the scene, he said.
