Sun editorial: Gifts for Good embarks on eighth-annual campaign

the editorial staff of the Sierra Sun

TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. and#8212; The past few weeks, the Sierra Sun has published information that has fostered plenty of discussion, both in the real world and on our web world, about such controversial topics as the Canyon Springs development, school district budget woes and the local election, to name a few.

And now, probably the biggest issue of debate out there surrounds whether the town of Truckee made the right move to spend $15,000 to erect the flower sculpture at the Pioneer Trail roundabout. The amount of debate on our website for and against this move is truly fascinating, especially for the objective observer.

Whether it’s flowers or big proposed developments, and regardless of the views expressed, one thing is for sure and#8212; many of our residents are very passionate about the Truckee and North Tahoe communities, and they are not shy about spending the time to opine on the topics.

So how about spending that time and energy on a wonderful opportunity to help others?

Today marks the official launch of the eighth-annual Gifts for Good campaign. For those unaware, Gifts for Good, sponsored by Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation in partnership with the Sierra Sun, raises money for local nonprofit organizations.

Here’s how it works. You make a tax-deductible donation to Gifts for Good for any amount and#8212; whether it is $5 or $500,000. Your donation will be promptly acknowledged and pooled with donations from many other donors. Then, beginning in January 2011, any nonprofit organization in Truckee/North Tahoe can apply for a grant.
