SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” Several more days with sunny, mild afternoons and clear, cold nights are forecast under a persistent high-pressure system over the Great Basin.

Highs today and Wednesday are expected to reach into lower to mid-60s around the Tahoe Basin, which are 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal normal for early November.

Overnight lows are forecast to drop into the teens at lake level, under clear skies and light winds, or around 5 to 10 degrees below the average for this date.

A strong temperature inversion has been noted under this high-pressure pattern, as heavier cold air drains downslope into the Tahoe Basin and other valleys capped by warmer air aloft. This inversion can be best observed by the early morning temperature differences between the valleys, with lows in the teens, and the midslopes around 6,500 to 8,000 feet, where lows in the mid-40s have been recorded.

The cold and stable air in the valleys will trap smoke, dust and other airborne particles. If you want better air quality and warmer temperatures, just head a few hundred feet above the lake or valley floors and enjoy the cleaner air.

Computer forecast models are still leaning toward a change in the weather by this weekend. Look for increasing clouds and cooler temperatures Friday, leading to a chance of rain and snow Friday night into Saturday. Those planning travel over the Sierra this weekend should stay tuned to the latest forecast and road reports.
