Suspect in 1995 murder of Truckee man cleared of charges

A man suspected of murdering a Truckee man in 1995 has been exonerated, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Armando Bravo Espitia, 30, was transported to Nevada County from Atlanta, Ga., last week on a Nevada County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant for suspicion of murdering 26-year-old Jaime Macias.

Armando was booked in Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on Dec. 11 as part of the investigation, until Macias’ widow, who witnessed the murder, viewed a photo of Armando and confirmed he was not the killer, according to sheriff’s reports.

In December 1995, Macias was shot in the abdomen with a .38-caliber handgun in Truckee.

The widow identified Armando’s brother, Sergio Espitia, 35, as the murderer, according to sheriff’s office reports. Investigators suspect that Sergio, who used to work at Tahoe Donner Golf Course, has been using Armando’s identification for years.

The whereabouts of Sergio, who is known by friends as Mondo, are unknown at this point, but investigators say they have developed some leads.

Armando was released from custody Tuesday.

Since Macias’ murder, investigators say the brothers had been the lead suspects in his murder. However, in initial reports, the sheriff’s office only identified Armando as a suspect.
