Tahoe beaches get booze ban

Sun News Service

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” The U.S. Forest Service and law enforcement again will implement alcohol bans on three popular Lake Tahoe beaches for the Fourth of July.

The Forest Service will prohibit the possession and use of alcohol on Nevada Beach and within Zephyr Cove Resort. Alcohol also will be prohibited in the Zephyr Shoals parcel (the Dreyfus Estate) next to the resort, according to a statement from the Forest Service.

This prohibition has been in place each of the past 10 years at Nevada Beach because of previous alcohol-related incidents, and at Zephyr Cove Resort starting last year because of ongoing problems with drinking and related behaviors.

Violators will be cited or given the option of leaving the area with their alcoholic beverages.

There will be a one-day beach parking fee increase to $20 for Nevada, Pope and Baldwin beaches July 4. Holders of annual, senior and access passes will be charged half-price.

Zephyr Cove Resort will charge this expanded fee for July 4 and 5, and also offer special holiday discounts for its resort services. The funds will be used to expand security and facility maintenance services along with improving public safety, according to the statement.

The Forest Service also asks the public to keep wildfire prevention in mind during Fourth of July celebrations. Private fireworks and sparklers are illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Fires are not allowed on Forest Service beaches or in most of the forest. For information on fire restrictions and threat information in the Lake Tahoe basin, visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu.
