Tahoe City man dies while on charity bicycle ride in Nevada

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. (AP) ” A 51-year-old man has died while taking part in a charity bicycle ride in the Reno area.

Storey County sheriff’s deputies say Ricardo Ramirez of Tahoe City, Calif., went down Saturday during the portion of the 2008 ALS Sierra Challenge in their county southeast of Reno.

They say the cause of death is unknown and an autopsy will be performed to pinpoint it.

The Sierra challenge raises money to support research on Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The event takes bicyclists mostly around Reno but one stretch takes riders up Geiger Grade into Storey County.

Deputies say a fellow rider who’s a doctor tried to revive Ramirez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
