The Tahoe Community Sailing/TCPUD has been awarded “Outstanding Seasonal Community Sailing Program for 2008” by U.S. Sailing, the national governing body of sailing.

This award was presented at the Annual U.S. Sailing Symposium in San Diego. Program Director Bryce Griffith received the award on behalf of Tahoe Community Sailing Foundation/TCPUD from Jim Capron, President of U.S. Sailing and Diane Wentzel, Chairperson for the Community Sailing Council of U.S. Sailing. Wentzel outlined why Tahoe Community Sailing was chosen. The development of effective public/private community partnerships that includes the Tahoe City Public Utility District, the Tahoe Yacht Club and Obexer’s Marina and the establishment of a community summer sailing program were two highlights.

President Capron added the establishment of a curriculum of sailing education encompassing class instruction from the beginning level to advanced coaching at the racing level, a Junior Instructor development program, and a community outreach program that has provided scholarships throughout the community, were also reasons for giving this award to Tahoe Community Sailing/TCPUD.

Tahoe Community Sailing/TCPUD was chosen for the award from more than 400 sailing programs across the country. Summer sailing classes begin mid-June and run through August. Registration is through the Tahoe City Public Utility District Recreation Department. Visit http://www.tcpud.org or call 583-3796 for information.
