Tahoe digs out from several feet of snow, more on Tuesday

LAKE TAHOE ” The weekend storm left an amazing 8-11 feet of new snow at Kirkwood with 5-9 feet at other ski areas around Lake Tahoe.

Around 2 to 4 feet of snow fell at lake level during the three-day storm along with numerous road closures and delays. The water content of this snow was a blessing as the water equivalent went from 50 percent of normal before the storms to 100 percent of normal by Sunday.

Today looks like an excellent day to enjoy the new deep powder as a few lingering snow showers along the mountains early this morning gives way to partly cloudy skies and light winds.

Dress warm as highs are forecast to top out near 30 degrees around the lake and Truckee, and in the lower 20s at 8,000 feet. Lows tonight will drop into the teens with increasing clouds ahead of our next storm system on Tuesday.

Snow is forecast to increase throughout the day Tuesday with accumulations of a foot or two possible above 7,000 feet and 6 to 10 inches at lake level by Tuesday night. Highs Tuesday will reach the lower to mid 30s and southwest winds 15 to 30 mph at lower elevations with gusts to 80 mph along the Sierra crest.

Look for a break in the weather on Wednesday ahead of the next milder and weaker storm forecast to bring a chance of rain and snow to the Tahoe area on Thursday.
