Tahoe Donner board fires general manager
The Tahoe Donner Association board of directors has voted to dismiss the assocation’s general manager, Bob Broyer.
The board voted Friday in a special meeting to terminate Broyer, who has been general manager for at least four years.
“What the board did is give him notice, and he has up to 90 days (to leave),” said Ron Wulff, president of the board.
Wulff said that he could not reveal who among the board voted to dismiss Broyer, or what the final vote was.
He also said that he could not say why Broyer was dismissed.
“It was a board decision that was made and it’s pretty much internal to Tahoe Donner,” Wulff said.
Wulff, along with board vice president H.R. “Dick” Halpin and Greg McDougall, were all elected to the board in July, following a campaign in which some candidates promised change and accountability in the association. The three new members joined incumbents Ted Langan and Herm Shaver.
Wulff said that dismissing the association’s general manager was not a part of the new members’ campaign platform.
“It wasn’t part of running for the board,” he said.
However, one former board member said that Broyer was not given a fair chance to work with the new board members.
“I don’t feel (Broyer’s) performance was lacking at all,” said Bruce Cornell, a Tahoe Donner resident who also served on the board of directors for four years until termed out last summer. “I feel that in the last three months, this board never gave Mr. Broyer a chance to succeed by giving him attainable goals.”
As of Tuesday morning, Wulff said that no formal notice had been given to the association’s 6,000-plus members of Broyer’s dismissal, but was planned soon.
“We will probably send an e-mail and will also include notice in the next (Tahoe Donner) newsletter,” he said.
Cornell said he felt association members deserved to be kept in the loop.
“I think this affects the continuity in your homeowner’s association,” he said. “It affects homeowners who are jittery about the economy in general.”
The board of directors had recently released 2001/2002 set goals, which were printed in the October issue of Tahoe Donner News. Goals for the general manager were scheduled to be completed by January.
When Broyer leaves, Wulff said that Dave Gravell, the association’s assistant general manager and legal counsel, will become the interim general manager.
“We will be conducting a search for a new general manager,” Wulff said.
