Tahoe-Donner chase ends in arrest

After a high-speed chase through Tahoe Donner, police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of vehicle theft, evading a peace officer, hit and run, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Moises Ayala Chavez was booked into Nevada County Jail Monday after the pursuit.

At approximately 3 p.m. a Truckee Police Department officer spotted a Chevy pickup truck speeding on Copenhagen and Herringbone at about 75 mph.

The officer pursued the vehicle to Skislope Way, where the suspect lost control of the vehicle and rolled off the street.

“He hit a couple of signs when he made his turn off Copenhagen to Skislope,” Truckee Police Commander Scott Berry said.

The suspect then fled the scene. He was arrested when witnesses alerted officers to his location.

An investigation later revealed that Chavez’s vehicle had been reported stolen from Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Las Vegas, Nev. The license plate on the truck was registered to a 1992 GMC pickup that was reported as junk.

Chavez had rented the truck on Sept. 8 in Las Vegas and used identification that had been stolen in Reno on Aug. 20.

Truckee detectives will be working with the Reno and Las Vegas Police departments.
