Tahoe Forest Hospital District: Sessler, Sullivan to serve hospital
The Tahoe Forest Hospital District board of directors will have a new face and a familiar face – incumbent MaryLou Sullivan and semi-retired physician and business owner Karen Sessler won the two open seats in a close race.
Just over a hundred votes separated each of the top three finishers: Sessler, Sullivan and Anthony G. Zissimos, an orthopedic surgeon, and the tally changed when Placer County and Nevada County votes were combined.
Sessler finished with a total of 4,106 votes and 28 percent of the vote, Sullivan with 3,976 and 27 percent of the vote and Zissimos with 3,832 and 26 percent of the vote.
In Nevada County alone, Zissimos had the most votes (2,406) and 28 percent of the vote, but in Placer County he trailed behind Sessler and Sullivan with 1,426 votes and 23 percent.
The fourth candidate, John Falk, a community relations coordinator, finished overall with 2,620 votes and 18 percent of the vote. In Placer County, he was only hundreds of votes away from his opponents and had 1,282 votes at 21 percent.
“With every result listing, it changed,” Sessler said.
Sessler said she believes her “old-style campaigning” of getting out and shaking people’s hands paid off for this election.
“I’m thrilled. Now the hard work starts,” Sessler said excitedly Tuesday night as the final numbers came in. “It was a lot of fun. It was wonderful getting out there and talking to so many people in the community. I hope we can all work together as a community. I’m looking forward to wonderful things.”
MaryLou Sullivan, a dental hygienist, Channel 6 television producer and current president of the TFH board of directors, could not be reached for comment on her victory Wednesday morning.
The hospital district, dealing with community growth and service expansion issues, is facing the same challenges most hospitals in rural communities face.
Both Sullivan and Sessler have pledged their intent to encourage the public to participate in hospital business.
