TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — In preparation for the Tahoe City Xterra Triathlon, the Tahoe LUNA Chix will host a triathlon clinic especially for the ladies Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. Clinic participants will get a taste of the challenging Tahoe City course while learning tricks of the trade from Tahoe LUNA and Tahoe City resident Genevieve Evans. “This clinic is going to be a great opportunity for an exchange of ideas,” said Evans. “We’ll gear the discussions to the group. If it’s a beginner group we’ll focus on the basics, if it’s a more experienced group, we’ll take it to the next level.”

Evans, who has competed in triathlons since 2003, took her race game to the next level last year when she became the second amateur woman overall to finish at the 2012 Xterra Nationals in Ogden, Utah. Evans’ performance at Nationals qualified her for Pro Status in this year’s Xterra series. “I figure, I’m almost 40, I might as well go for it now,” she said. “Last year at Nationals I had my best time on the course and I’m in the best shape of my life.”

Before getting involved in triathlons, Evans said she was in the worst shape of her life. Living in the Bay Area, working at a job in the stock market, she didn’t have the time or energy for her own fitness. That all changed in 2001 when she decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,650-mile endeavor that spanned the course of an entire summer. Hiking the PCT led Evans to pursue a quest for better and better fitness, which led her to triathlon and eventually to the Xterra series, which takes the traditional road biking portion of triathlon onto single-track mountain bike terrain.

The Tahoe City Xterra Triathlon Clinic will cover tricks for trail passing, transition areas, tips for dealing with Tahoe’s frigid early season waters, race day nutrition, and more. The Tahoe LUNA Chix is a branch of the national LUNA Chix team that works to empower women through outdoor activity while raising money for the Breast Cancer Fund. Admission to Saturday’s clinic is free. A $15 donation to the BCF is greatly appreciated. Participants should bring their swim, bike, and run gear.
