Tahoe skiers Kip Garre, Allison Kreutzen killed in eastern Sierra avalanche

Sun staff report

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. and#8212;-Squaw Valley skiers and Lake Tahoe locals Kip Garre and his girlfriend, Allison Kreutzen, were killed this week in an avalanche near Lone Pine, Calif., various news outlets are reporting.

According to reports, the avalanche occurred Tuesday; their bodies were found Thursday in a search and rescue mission after friends and family became alarmed they had not heard from the pair, who left three days earlier to ski the Split Couloir in the eastern Sierra.

Powdermag.com was first to report the tragic news.

Garre grew up in Hancock, N.H. According to the skiing magazine’s website, Garre, captivated by the freeskiing movement of the early 90s, moved to Squaw Valley and was an early supporter in the park scene before shifting his focus to ski mountaineering and backcountry adventures. He made descents down some of the world’s most elusive mountains, including in Kashmir, Pakistan, China, the Tetons, the Alps, Alaska, Antarctica and his beloved Sierras.

Garre was with freeskier and Tahoe local Arne Backstrom in Peru in June 2010 when Backstrom was killed on Pisco Mountain.
