Tahoe sports concussion education program will knock your socks off

Special to the Sun

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Sportgevity will host a concussion education program sponsored by the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research (TIRHR) and presented by the California Concussion Coalition and the Sports Legacy Institute (SLI), a Boston-based nonprofit organization founded to advance the study, treatment, and prevention of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups.

The program will take place in the Olympic Village Inn on Friday, Nov. 15, 7-8:30 p.m., and is free to the public.

The SLI Advanced Concussion Training (ACT) will be presented by coalition co-chair and chief medical officer of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team, Cindy J. Chang, M.D., and coalition co-chair and executive director of the Mt. Diablo Memory Center Sport Concussion Program Eric Freitag, Psy.D.

Guest speaker local professional snowboarder Danny Toumarkine will also discuss his recovery from a serious head injury nearly three years ago.

“The Advanced Concussion Training is an evidence-based educational program that will provide attendees with the knowledge on how to appropriately identify, respond to, and address concussion injuries in athletes,” said Dr. Freitag. “The training exceeds the requirements of California state law that mandates concussion education for high school coaches, and we are excited to join the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research and Sportgevity in offering this to the Tahoe community.”

“SLI is the group responsible for bringing the issue of head injuries in the NFL into the national spotlight. This is a special opportunity for the Tahoe community to connect with doctors who are national and world experts in the field,” said Robb Gaffney of Sportgevity.

The Coalition accomplishes its mission through leveraging existing programs of Coalition members focused on prevention, education, assessment, management, and research. SLI launched the Coalition in August 2012 and it now has more than 30 members, including organizations such as the Brain Injury Association of California, the Brain Injury Network of the Bay Area, LA84 Foundation, Mt. Diablo Memory Center, Sport Concussion Program, the NFL Retired Players Association, Santa Clara University Institute of Sports Law and Ethics, and Southern California Orthopedic Institute.
