Tahoe Transportation District seeks emergency funding

Sun Staff Report

The Tahoe Transportation District has applied to the Nevada Department of Transportation for emergency funding to help maintain Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) Service from July to November.

This request comes after the Regional Transportation Committee, which funds TART, directed its staff to cut the funding for TART and request that area agencies find different ways to fund TART or the service could face elimination or severe reduction.

The Regional Committee is facing a $4.7 million revenue shortfall based on the assumptions that sales tax revenue will fall by 11 percent in fiscal year 2009 and will not grow in fiscal year 2010. Its main source of funding is sales tax revenue, and supports TART with about $309,000 a year.

The Transportation District, an acting arm of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, is requesting $65,625 from Nevada to support the present level of TART service for five months. This money will bridge the gap while the District formally applies for Federal Transit Administration Section 5311 funds, according to a letter the District sent to the state.

The Committee has said it will provide the local match for the federal funds, but they will contribute no more than $157,500 to support TART operations. The District intends to apply for $157,500 in federal 5311 funds to keep TART running as usual.
