Tahoe/Truckee schools budget discussion Wednesday

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; A discussion of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School Districtand#8217;s budget situation is set for a 5:30 p.m. Wednesday meeting at the Sierra Mountain Community Education Center in Truckee.

Steve Dickinson, assistant superintendent of business services, is expected to provide an update on the state and local budget situation. In June the district found it would probably need to slash another $2.6 million from its budget for the upcoming school year, after the board trimmed about $3.7 million earlier this year.

If those cuts are approved in the state budget, the board will need to begin implementing the reductions immediately, Dickinson said.

Also on the agenda is the announcement of the formation of a community budget committee to give residents a more thorough understanding of public education finance, on which Dickinson is expected to provide details.

On the boardand#8217;s consent agenda is approval of a contract to prepare the area outside North Tahoe Middle School for installation of new playground equipment. According to the agenda the contract includes installing a handicap-accessible ramp, new basketball backstops, tether ball courts, drainage upgrades and other miscellaneous work. The work is expected to cost less than $30,000 and funded through Measure R funds, a facilities bond.
