Teachers close in on agreement

Teachers and school district officials have reached a tentative contract agreement, but nothing is final.
Negotiators representing the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District and the Tahoe Truckee Education Association met with a mediator last Friday in their fifth attempt to solidify a contract for the 2006-2007 school year.
“I think both sides were anxious to get it settled, so both sides gave in to some issues on the table so that we could come to an agreement,” said Assistant Superintendent Jo Wilson.
Details have not been released, but should be available by the end of the week when the education association will meet to discuss the contract and vote on whether to ratify the agreement.
“I’m hopeful that it will be passed by our membership, but it’s up to them,” said Scott Beaudry, lead negotiator for the education association. “But in terms of where we were, this came out positively.”
Contract negotiations happen annually, but have become increasingly difficult for local teachers and administrators to hammer out in the past few years due to conflicting demands.
