THE BIG DAY
Despite nationwide worries over high record turnouts today, voting in the Truckee-Tahoe area is expected to run smoothly.
While overall turnout is expected to be high, a large portion of area residents have already cast their votes by either early voting machines or mail-in ballots.
Jim McCauley, Placer County Clerk Recorder, said he expects 81 to 83 percent voter turnout, but 57 to 58 percent of those people have already voted.
“With that many vote-by-mail voters turnout at the polls shouldn’t be that heavy,” McCauley said. “It’s not that there won’t be any lines ” there may be some in the morning and evening ” but nothing like the long lines other counties and states face.”
Nevada County is expecting similar figures, said Gail Smith, acting assistant clerk-recorder for Nevada County.
“We’ve had early voting on e-slate machines since Oct. 6,” Smith said.
Out of a total of 65,835 voters, 45,124 have been issued vote-by-mail ballots, and 29,658 have already been checked in, Smith said.
At the end of the day, the ballots will be collected and taken down to Nevada City and Auburn respectively in county vehicles.
Depending on the weather, McCauley said sheriff escorts could accompany the county vehicles, or sheriffs will carry the ballots instead.
But Smith was optimistic about the weather.
“In February we had horrid conditions and still got the results in,” she said.
Once the ballots make it down, Smith said she expects preliminary results by 11:30 p.m.
McCauley said he expects results for Placer County between midnight and 12:30 a.m.
