How long does it take to learn how to ride a Segway?

About three minutes, what else can you learn how to do in three minutes?

Do you have to be a certain age?

Sixteen, but I just had a 4-year-old riding on it.

How many people have you taught to ride the Segway?

I’ve taught about 2,000 (at Squaw Valley) and 10,000 total. I found out I was pretty good at teaching people.

How far can you go on it?

It gets 25 miles on one battery charge and it costs about 11 cents to charge it. People say ‘oh you’re wasting electricity’ but even if you’re riding a bike you can’t go 25 miles on 11 cents worth of food. The electric car is the mode of the future. It uses a tenth of the energy or gasoline.

Where do you ride?

I take it from Alpine Meadows to Squaw Valley. It can go off road but you’ve got to make sure you don’t high center it.

How big is the Segway?

It’s about the same size as an office chair. It’s three-feet wide so it’s not great if you are in a tight spot, normal (Segways) are as wide as your shoulders. You have to think about how wide it is. I rode it to the top of Northstar, when it goes downhill it recharges the battery.

Have you ever had any accidents on the Segway?

I did break a rib playing Segway polo, I went over like Superman.

Where do you charge it?

You can charge it anywhere.

How much does a Segway cost?

It’s about $5000, that’s the biggest problem.
