It’s become popular in the last four years carrying over from kite surfers (on water).

What is the best terrain for snowkiting?

Open, flat terrain is best. With (snow) kiting you’ve opened up an unlimited amount of terrain.

How about the weather?

When it’s cold windy and nasty you wouldn’t want to go snowboarding but it’s great for snowkiting.

What improvements have you seen in the equipment in the last four years?

The equipment is always getting better and safer. There’s a lot more control now (than four years ago.)

What does it take to learn how to snowkite?

The sport combines two different disciplines, snowboarding or skiing and flying a kite and the trick is being able to link the two together, after a while it becomes second nature.

Tell me more about Snowkite Saturdays.

We are hosting snowkiting clinics this winter in Truckee-Tahoe and include free demos of equipment. Upcoming clinics are scheduled for Feb. 7 and 21, and March 14 and 15. We also offer lessons. For more information go to tahoemountainsports.com.

Who usually comes to the clinics?

It’s usually kite surfers wanting to try the sport in the winter, but I encourage anyone who snowboards or skis to try the sport.
