Today’s weather: Scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms today

A weakening upper level low pressure system off the Northern California coast will bring another round of mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms to the Lake Tahoe area today and Thursday.

Highs today are forecast to reach the mid to upper 50s under mostly cloudy skies. Winds are expected to be light except for strong gusts over 40 mph near any thunderstorms. Look for lows tonight to dip into the lower to mid 30s with some patchy morning fog developing again near Truckee.

Further weakening of the low pressure system on Thursday will bring a little warmer temperatures with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s around the lake under partly cloudy skies. Still enough lingering moisture and instability for a chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm triggered by daytime heating.

High pressure will finally move into the area on Friday for mostly sunny skies and temperatures warming back into the mid 60s or near the seasonal normal.

While this rain has had little effect on the seasonal precipitation deficit it has improved the vegetative fuel moisture and lowered fire danger for the near term.
