Tool thefts on the rise in areaa

A rash of recent robberies have thieves targeting tools in Truckee.

“The building season is upon us,” said Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Gary Jacobson. “More and more construction means more theft of tools.”

Sometimes that theft can result in the loss of thousands of dollars in tools.

Summit Valley Construction was the victim of a recent robbery. Over 25 types of tools were stolen from a construction site in Tahoe Donner on April 4.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Capt. Jacobson said that tools are an easy target for thieves.

“Tools are easy to get rid of because there are no identifying marks on most of them. Often they use the same numbers over and over again, which can make it impossible for us to ever recover them.”

Capt. Jacobson said that officers have found stolen tools in Reno pawn shops and local yard sales.

He doesn’t think the recent rash of robberies is connected with organized crime, but said the department does not entirely rule out that possibility.

“We don’t have any information on an organized crime ring, but it is always a possibility,” said Jacobson.
