TRPA gets a new boat

If you happen to see a large aluminum watercraft out on the lake, it’s not the sheriff ” TRPA is leasing a 28-foot aluminum boat to perform duties such as public education and illegal buoy control, TRPA officials said.

TRPA’s watercraft team was formed in 2000 after TRPA banned 2-stroke carbureted engines from the lake, said Angela Moniot, spokeswoman for TRPA. The team is comprised of one full-time staff person and three seasonal staff, who work June through October. The purpose of the team on the lake is to enforce TRPA regulations, to educate the public about laws on the lake, and to assist law enforcement agencies in the event of an emergency.

The new boat will allow the team to work faster and for a longer period each year.

“It’s better able to handle nasty weather (on the lake) in the winter,” Watercraft Program Manager, Dennis Zabaglo said.

Whether the watercraft team receives funding to work on the lake in the winter depends on TRPA’s yet-to-be-released shorezone plan, Zabaglo said.

“With Lake Tahoe being as much like an ocean as it can be, we needed a safe platform (to work),” said Steve Chilton, who oversees the watercraft team for the TRPA.

Chilton said they had a much smaller boat for a number of years, and last summer that boat had structural problems which had to be reinforced.
