Truckee affordable housing: Public workshop Thursday

Sun staff report

The Housing Element Workshop will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Truckee Town Hall. For more information, contact Duane Hall at (530) 582-2918 or at

TRUCKEE “-Are Truckee’s affordable housing policies working?

What about those who don’t qualify for affordable housing, but can’t afford market-driven prices? The town is holding a meeting Thursday to get public input on these and other housing issues, beginning the update of the General Plan Housing Element.

“As part of the update we want to look back at all the elements ” what’s currently working? Where do we need to make changes?” said Town Planner Duane Hall.

While affordable housing has been a hot topic for the last few years, Hall said any and every element of housing in Truckee is on the table for discussion.

“Right now affordable housing is available to people at or below 120 percent of the county’s median income,” Hall said. “What about the people that make more than that but still can’t afford housing?”

The scope of discussion will also look at what different housing policies do to developments and businesses trying to build, Hall said.

Another public workshop will likely be held in March, and the state requirement means the new General Plan Housing Element must be adopted by August, Hall said.
