Truckee fire to annex Floriston

The Board of Directors of the Truckee Fire Protection District met in regular session on Tuesday, March 20 and approved the resolution of Floriston to be annexed into the district.

“This process started about a year ago,” said Fire Chief Mike Terwilliger. “People in those areas thought they had fire protection with us, but that was not the case.”

As part of the annexation process, Floriston was asked to create a detailed map of the areas they wanted protected. The community then filed a written request with the county to begin annexation proceedings.

“Annexation will help those areas because counties aren’t forced to supply fire protection,”said Terwilliger. “If we were called out to, say, a structural fire, they would be billed for those services, which can be pretty expensive.”

After annexation is approved by the Nevada County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo), Floriston will no longer have to worry about footing their own bill.

“Now that they have annexed, protection will be paid for through property taxes,” said Terwilliger.
