Truckee Fire’s territory to grow

The Truckee Fire Protection District’s annexation of the Donner Summit Fire Department is expected to be approved next month.

Talks to transfer administration and management to Truckee Fire began more than two years ago when the Summit’s small fire department, which is operated by the Donner Summit Public Utility District, began struggling with personnel turnover, thin financial margins and the fact that the department did not have a full-time chief.

“For the residents of this community to continue to enjoy a high level of service, someone else needs to do the job,” said Tom Skjelstad, general manager of the Donner Summit PUD. “Economy of scale makes it more financially viable (for Truckee Fire).”

The exchange, which must first be given the green light by the Nevada County Local Agency Formation Commission, will not bring any extra costs to tax payers.
