Truckee girls basketball breaks even in tourney

The Truckee High girls basketball team finished 2-2 in the preseason McQueen Tournament from Dec. 26-28.

The Wolverines (3-11) nearly upset 4A Damonte Ranch in the opening round of the tournament, losing 44-42, before bouncing back to beat Lowry, a Northern 3A division foe, 53-42.

Truckee then lost to Fallon, another 4A program, 60-37, before closing out the tournament with a 44-21 win over Bishop (Calif.).

“Overall we did pretty well,” Truckee coach Angelo Tenorio said. “We struggled against the two 4A teams with their quickness and size and ability to take the ball to the basket ” and with our inability to get back on defense.”

With three of his top players slowed with the flu, however ” Breanne Busby, Lindsay Holt and Kelsey Shalvis “Tenorio said he was pleased to finish the tournament with an even mark.

The coach was also encouraged by Truckee’s near-win against Damonte Ranch.

“We could have won,” Tenorio said, explaining that his team missed at least 15 layups during the contest. “We just had a lack of focus and couldn’t pull it out.”

The Wolverines also hung tight with Fallon for one half, as they entered the break trailing by only a couple points, Tenorio said. But fatigue took over in the second half, and Fallon ran away with the lopsided win.

Truckee plays at McQueen on Wednesday before hosting Yerington to kick off league Friday at 5:30 p.m.
