Truckee girls drop nonleague game

The Truckee High girls basketball team dropped a nonleague home contest 38-26 against North Valleys on Monday.

Truckee is now 1-6 on the season, playing all seven games against larger 4A programs.

“It just gives us better competition and helps us prepare for league,” Angelo Tenorio, Truckee’s head coach, said of scheduling all 4A opponents prior to Northern 3A league play.

Truckee hosts Yerington on Jan. 4 to kick off league.

Truckee seniors Breanne Busby and Lindsay Holt led the Wolverines with six points apiece against North Valleys. Meghan Kotko and Annie Rodriguez each scored four points, and Michelle Hoehn, Kati Murphy and Katy Stephens chipped in two points each.

This past weekend the Wolverines went 1-2 in the Reno Tournament. The girls lost to Hug the first game of the tourney, 42-32, before bouncing back to defeat Lassen (Calif.) 65-59. Truckee lost 38-33 to South Tahoe in its final game.

Tenorio was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We played incredibly well throughout the tournament,” the coach said. “The girls are working hard and improving every day.”

Truckee plays at Hug on Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting McQueen on Frday, Dec. 21.
