Truckee girls hoops split during weekend

The Truckee High girls basketball team dropped a league game 57-55 to Fernley on Friday before bouncing back to defeat Sparks 41-31 on the road Saturday.

The Wolverines spotted Fernley 11 points before finally scoring, and they never led during the contest.

“(The Vaqueros) shot the lights out, especially in the first half,” Truckee coach Angelo Tenorio said. “Their shooting percentage had to have been over 55 percent. We played a good game, we just didn’t shoot the same percentage.”

Truckee pulled to within one point with a minute remaining, but Fernley managed to hold off the late charge.

Seniors Breanne Busby and Kelsey Shalvis led the Wolverines with 12 points apiece, while Lindsay Holt chipped in 10 points.

Against Sparks, Tenorio said his team started out sluggish and struggled throughout much of the game with turnovers and overall sloppy play.

Busby scored a team-high 18 points and sophomore Katy Stephens scored 11.

“Katy played really well offensively and defensively,” Tenorio said. “She and Breanne kind of led us that day.”

Truckee hosts a makeup game with Yerington today (Wednesday) at 4:30 p.m. Boys tip off at 6.
