Truckee golf clinches league title

The Truckee High golf team clinched the Northern 3A’s No. 1 seed with its third consecutive win and fifth of the season at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course on Friday.

North Tahoe placed third among 2A schools and seventh overall.

Truckee edged second-place Yerington by seven strokes, posting a team score of 402 to the Lions’ 409. Lowry (425) was third in the 3A competition, followed by Spring Creek (459), Fernley (469) and Dayton (539).

“The boys are starting to play with consistency and confidence,” said Truckee head coach Jeff Froelich. “Our entire team hits the golf ball well and are capable of posting good scores.”

Senior Pat Galvin fired a 79 to lead the Wolverines, while teammates Bryce Poulin and Ethan Harmon each carded an 80.

Brandon Dalton of Fernley shot a tournament-low 70.

The highlight of Truckee’s day came when junior Ethan Harmon rolled in an eagle 3 on Edgewood’s famous 500-yard par 5 18th hole. Daniel Gelso posted an 81, followed by Will Collin’s 82 and Matt Hardy’s 86.

“I am very proud and fond of these guys. There is a great deal of team chemistry,” Froelich said. “Everybody is pulling for each other. These are attributes that can take you a long ways.”

The Wolverines lead the regular-season standings with 60 points. Lowry is second with 54 and Yerington third with 43.

After the final league tournament at Grizzly Ranch Golf Club on Thursday, the top three Northern 3A teams will travel to Mesquite, Nev., where the Virgin Valley Bulldogs will host the two-day State Tournament on May 13.

“We will leave a little early for Mesquite to play a couple of other golf courses while trying to acclimate to the warmer climate,” Froelich said.

“We are going into the State Championships with two goals: play well and have fun. We’ll let the rest take care of itself.”

The Lakers placed third against six Northern 2A schools with a score of 480.

Whittell, which practiced on the Edgewood course all week, was first in the 2A and third overall at 419. Battle Mountain was second at 465. ROP shot a 562 and Hawthorne and Sierra Lutheran did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

Individually for North Tahoe, Alec Griffith led the way with an 82. He was followed by Travis Boerner, who shot an 83, Daniel Longo (101), Sean Lovely (105) and Conner Whaley (109).

North Tahoe will vie for a state tournament berth at the Northern 2A regional tournament at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course on Wednesday. The top three teams advance to the 2A State Championship at Needles on May 12-13.

Laker head coach Dick Tomlinson said that his team, in all likelihood, should make the cut along with Whittell and Battle Mountain.

In addition to the three teams, the top five scoring individuals at zones qualify to compete at state.

Truckee hosts the final league tournament of the season at Grizzly Ranch Golf Club on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

North Tahoe will compete the Northern 2A regional tournament at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course on Wednesday. Play starts at noon.
