Truckee hailed ‘Best Ski Town’ by magazine

Staff reports

Ski magazine deemed Truckee one of the “18 Best Ski Towns for Family-Style Success” in its February issue.

Managing Editor Natalie Kurylko said Truckee was chosen on the basis of its community involvement, eight nearby alpine areas, 500 miles of Nordic trails and some of the least expensive housing in the Tahoe area.

“A lot of the towns we listed were real towns, not the Aspens or Taos,” Kurylko said. “We looked for a strong community feel or educational options.”

“From a family perspective, it needed to be remote enough to be safe,” she added.

The author, Hannah Nordhaus, also named Bend, Ore., Bozeman, Mont., Burlington, Vt., Edwards, Colo., and Park City, Utah, amid the ranks of Truckee for family-style success.

“…with a brand new community college campus, a happening historical downtown and strong civic pride, Truckee is where Tahoe’s real people live,” Nordhaus wrote.

The article also listed Truckee’s median income: $34,083; it’s main businesses: tourism, real estate, retail, construction and telecommuting; public school population: 4,485 students; and unemployment rate: 4.2 percent.
