Truckee High Academic Challenge team sweeps home match
TRUCKEE, Calif. — Truckee High School’s Academic Challenge team dominated its home match on Feb. 3, winning all four rounds against visiting schools.
The Academic Challenge is a club where students compete in trivia and other academic challenges against schools from different areas. The club provides an opportunity for students to collaborate, study together, and quiz each other in preparation for these competitions. Through this, members not only enhance their knowledge but also foster connections and interact with students from other schools.
In the actual competition, teams are stationed across from one another, each with buzzers. They are posed questions covering subjects such as math, history, science, and literature. A player from either team can buzz in to answer the question. If the answer is correct, that team earns a point; if the answer is incorrect, the other team is given a chance to respond.
A five-time state champion, Truckee is aiming for another strong season, which includes just five matches before regionals and state in mid-February.
Led by coach Michael Mazzie, the team delivered impressive victories:
- Round 1: Truckee defeated Silver Stage 31-16.
- Round 2: Truckee beat Yerington 32-9.
- Round 3: Truckee won against North Tahoe 36-11.
- Round 4: Truckee topped Fernley 27-17.
“I just spend my free time learning,” Truckee team member Ayden Davern, said.
Next, the team heads to a competition in Fernley as it continues its season.
