Melissa has been a member of Truckee Troop 660 since kindergarten. During that time, the troop has earned numerous merit badges, participated in community service projects, traveled to several amusement parks, attended the annual Camporee, gone backpacking and, of course, sold cookies.

With the other members of her troop, Melissa has earned her Bronze and Silver Awards. The Gold Award, however, needs to be an individual effort. Before the project may be started, the scout needs to complete four steps that each involve four to five parts. The steps include obtaining the Girl Scout Leadership Award, the Career Award, the Girl Scout Challenge and completing merit badges pertaining to the project.

Before the project can be started, it must be approved by Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada in Reno. The project should focus on the community beyond Girl Scouts and needs to take at least 65 hours. After completion of the project, the girl submits a final report to the Girl Scout Council to be considered for the recognition.

Melissa chose to build a sandbox for the day-care center at Sierra High School. She used the scholarship she had been given by the local Soroptimist to buy a spa cover. Truckee Tahoe Lumber contributed the wood, Ace Hardware furnished incidental materials and The Rock Garden supplied the sand.

“Every child deserves a fun place to learn,” Melissa said.
