Truckee High wrestling team kicks off New Year with strong performance at Sparks Invitational
TRUCKEE, Calif. – The Truckee High School Wrestling team rang in the new year with an impressive showing at the Sparks Invitational over the weekend. The team secured seven semi-finalists and seven medalists, including two individual champions: freshman Ace Pena (1st at 106 pounds) and junior Jack Ridgel (1st at 132 pounds).
The girls’ team also made its mark, with junior Dahlia Cohen taking 3rd place in the 130-pound weight class. Other notable finishers included senior Lucas Scapini, who placed 4th at 126 pounds, junior Ryder Boyd (6th at 190 pounds), junior Beau Laboissonniere (5th at 215 pounds), and sophomore Alan Cadena (5th at 285 pounds).
Pena’s victory was particularly notable, as it marked a triumphant return after recovering from a broken wrist sustained in October. Ridgel’s win was also a standout moment, as he defeated Kaiden Irwin of Sparks, the 2nd place finisher at the 2024 Nevada State Championships at 120 pounds, in an anticipated final bout. Scapini, who fought hard for third place, fell to Matthew O’Brien of Wooster, the 2nd place finisher at the 2024 Nevada State Championships at 126 pounds. Boyd and Cadena both made it to the semi-finals but lost to the eventual champions in their respective weight classes.
As a team, Truckee placed 6th overall, staying in the hunt for team medals until the final rounds. This marked the first time under the current coaching staff that Truckee has been in contention for team hardware.
“I look forward to continuing to fine tune each and every one of our skill sets as we approach the last few weeks of the season. We have a handful of wrestlers who will look to compete for a spot at this year’s State Championships in Fallon, Nevada,” Head Coach, Derek Entz, said.
