Truckee murder suspect’s bail set at $500,000

Nevada County Superior Court Judge Andy Holmer set $500,000 bail Tuesday for Ron Blamey of Truckee, who is charged with the murder of his wife, California Department of Justice employee Michiel Blamey.

“Basically it’s very difficult to set an amount in a case like this, and ultimately it’s at the judge’s discretion,” Assistant District Attorney Fred Holmes said. “The $500,000 amount is consistent with bail set in other murder cases in recent years in Nevada County.”

Holmes said in setting bail, judges consider many important factors but that two of the most important concerns are public safety and determining whether the amount set assures the defendant will appear at the time of his or her hearing.

In order to post bail, Blamey must provide at least 10 percent of his total bail amount to a bail bonding company, LeeAnn Curtis of Alder Creek Bail Bonds said.

Because bail bonding companies are designed to insure an individual’s appearance in court and are governed like all insurance companies, the bonding company will then require of Blamey collateral equaling the full bond amount.

“He’s a fairly wealthy guy,” Holmes said. “He may be able to do it.”

At press time, Blamey had not yet posted bail. He is being held at the Wayne R. Brown Correctional Facility in Nevada City.
