Truckee police: 2 of 17 business fail non-enforcement underage tobacco sting

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; The Truckee Police Department in conjunction with the Nevada County Tobacco Use Prevention Project conducted a non-enforcement underage tobacco purchase operation Monday, July 9, in Truckee.

According to a Friday press release, the purpose of the operation was primarily that of a survey to determine the level of compliance of local merchants in verifying the age of the purchaser before selling tobacco products.

and#8220;Generally we are very pleased with the results,and#8221; said Capt. Harwood Mitchell in a statement. and#8220;None of the merchants were advised of the operation in advance. Of the 17 merchants contacted, only two stores sold tobacco products to the underage purchasers used for the operation.and#8221;

Neither of the merchants that sold tobacco to juveniles will be cited, according to the press release. All of the merchants will receive letters advising the department had conducted the operation and whether they are doing well or need improvement.

The department will conduct future tobacco operations, the press release states, and non-compliant businesses will be cited.
