Truckee police crack theft ring

Staff Reports

Two men and a woman suspected of stealing pay phones in Truckee and using the money to buy illegal drugs are in jail and the Truckee Police Department is looking for two other suspects involved in the thefts.

Christopher Haring, 20, was arrested on unrelated theft charges in Amador County, when he allegedly admitted to the stealing Truckee pay phones and led investigators to two other suspects.

Harings tip led to Kevin Furgeson, who was arrested in Truckee on Friday Feb. 11 on grand theft, criminal conspiracy and probation violations charges. He was booked in Nevada County Jail.

Haring also identified Brandy O’Neill, 20, who was already in Placer County Jail on unrelated theft charges. Both Furgeson and O’Neill allegedly admitted to being part of the pay phone robberies. A warrant will be sought for O’Neill’s arrest when she is released from Placer County Jail, according to Truckee Police reports.

The two other pay phone robbery suspects remain at large and are believed to have been involved in other robberies in the area.

Pay phones can be worth over $500, plus the money inside the phone, Truckee Police said.

Haring also led police to Joe Gonzalez, who allegedly broke into a concession stand at Truckee Regional Park. Gonzalez, 18, was arrested for burglary and booked in Nevada County Jail.
