Truckee Police swearing in Tuesday

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, the Town of Truckee will be will be welcoming the new Truckee Police Department with a swearing-in ceremony.

After eight years of contracting with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office for police service, the Town Council elected to form its first Police Department last year.

Statewide recruitment started with the selection of Chief Dan Boon from Pismo Beach. Chief Boon came on board in January and has been hiring personnel in preparation of the department’s starting date of Sept. 1.

The Truckee Police Department will have a sworn staff of 25 and five non-sworn personnel.

Presently the TPD has 20 officers on board with the final staffing to be completed by Sept. 30.

Present staffing includes officers from Southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout Northern California.

Six officers from Nevada County Sheriff’s Office who worked the Truckee area will also be joining the Truckee Police Department. The average experience for the 20 officers is 14 years.

The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Truckee River Regional Park, 10500 Old Brockway Road.

The public is invited to attend.
