Truckee post office still set on new site
July 16, 2008
The Town of Truckee is running out of options to retain the post office downtown.
Despite appeals by the town, the U.S. Postal Service is moving ahead with plans to replace the downtown and Deerfield Drive post offices with a new, larger facility on Donner Pass Road north of Interstate 80 at the Forest Service ranger station is now located.
“The problem for us is we don’t have the site to offer them in downtown,” said Town Manager Tony Lashbrook. “Every step they take makes it more difficult for us.”
The town, Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce and other residents have been concerned over the impact that losing the post office from downtown would have.
“From some factors it isn’t a bad location ” it’s a central location for vehicles, but it won’t have the synergy of being downtown,” Lashbrook said of the ranger station location.
The town council tonight will discuss potential next steps ” such as giving more input as the project becomes more clear or considering litigation, according to staff reports.
