TRUCKEE, Calif. — Vera Heidelberger celebrated her 102nd birthday at Tahoe Forest Health System’s Extended Care Center, Dec. 19, 2013.

Vera was born in Baltimore, Md., and lived in Orlando, Fla., with her husband Mark, until he passed away 10 years ago.

Mark served in the Navy and fought in World War II and the Korean War. Vera is the oldest of eight children and the only survivor.

Vera lived with her daughter, Peggy Heidelberger-Smith, and Peggy’s husband Andy in Alpine Meadows for 10 years until last summer.

When asked what advice or words she might offer about reaching more than 100 years, Vera responded, “I think to have a full life you have to have children.”

Her daughter Peggy Heidelberger-Smith, who was celebrating the big day with her mom, said, “I have never heard you say that before.”

Vera concluded, “They fill your life!”
