Truckee street name changed

The road that leads to East West Partners’ Old Greenwood subdivision will now be called Overland Trail.

Old Truckee Airport Road, which fire officials said too closely resembled Truckee Airport Road in the Martis Valley, will be deleted to accommodate the change.

East West Partners was required to change the street name, including the Interstate 80 offramp sign that reads “Prosser Village Road,” as a condition of the approval of Old Greenwood.

The development company floated a number of names, including: Old Greenwood Way, Tahoe Mountain Resort Drive, Resort Drive and Emigrant Trail.

The Truckee fire marshall opposed that name change to Old Greenwood Way because two streets in Prosser Lakeview already contain the words “Greenwood.” The similar name could result in confusion during an emergency, fire officials said.

Overland Trail was supported by the Truckee Donner Historical Society. The council voted to adopt the name, despite mixed opinions among the council members about the change.

A split off of the Emigrant Trail that carried pioneers across the Sierra Nevada ran through the site, according to the Truckee Donner Historical Society.
