Truckee theater holding auditions for ‘Bye, Bye Birdie’ musical
Truckee Community Theater is seeking singers, dancers and actors for its upcoming spring musical, the hilarious tribute to rock and roll, “Bye, Bye Birdie.”
The plot of the show revolves around national heartthrob Conrad Birdie, about to be drafted into the U.S. Army.
As a publicity stunt, his agent decides he should kiss one lucky teenage girl goodbye on national television. Kim MacAfee, a sweet 15-year-old from Sweet Apple, Ohio, is chosen, and the arrival of Birdie throws Sweet Apple residents into total chaos!
Lead roles for adults include Albert Peterson, Birdie’s harried manager; Rosie Alvarez, Albert’s devoted secretary; Conrad Birdie, the hip-thrusting, sultry-eyed rock star; Harry MacAfee, Kim’s father; Doris MacAfee, Kim’s mother; Mae Peterson, Albert’s overbearing mother; and Gloria Rasputin, a blonde bombshell competing with Rosie for Albert’s attention.
Roles for teens include Kim MacAfee, her boyfriend, Hugo Peabody; Ursula Merkle, Kim’s best friend; and a group of teens who sing, dance and have lines throughout the show.
There are many cameo small roles for adults, and a great part for a boy who will play Kim’s younger brother, Randolph. This show will feature a large chorus.
Tryouts will be held at the Community Arts Center at 10046 Church Street in Downtown Truckee as follows:
Adults and Teens: Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 6-9 p.m.
Kids (ages 6-11): Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 4-7 p.m.
Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday nights beginning Feb. 23 for chorus and leads, and Thursdays for leads only. There may be dance rehearsals on Wednesday evenings for a few weeks at the beginning.
Performances will be May 27-29 and June 3-5. The show will be directed by Courtney Simson.
