Truckee town council to discuss ballot question on parks funding

TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; With Truckee Donner Recreation andamp; Park District polling showing support of open space and trails, and the town looking for funding to connect the Truckee River Legacy Trail, the two agencies could partner up on a future ballot initiative.The rec and park recently approached the town about a ballot measure, starting talks between the two agencies. On Thursday, town council will discuss the possible collaboration, and provide staff direction on how such a ballot measure would be approached.According to town staff, the rec and park district proposes a special mailed ballot in August of 2011.The town has been looking for funding andamp;#8212; likely in excess of $4 million andamp;#8212; to complete the Legacy Trail from the Riverview Sports Park out to Glenshire, something the town would otherwise need to fund by going after grants, which could take years, according to staff reports.Other items on Thursdayandamp;#8217;s town council agenda include the renewal of an annual wildland fire contract with Calfire, and possible ordinances regarding sidewalks and crosswalks andamp;#8212; possibly prohibiting crossing streets and roadways outside of crosswalks.
