Truckee updates its development regulations

Although the adoption of the 2025 General Plan last November signified the completion of an intensive four-year process, still more work remains.

The General Plan is the town’s guiding document that dictates policy on issues the town will face. But the majority of those policies must be implemented through the development code, which town staff, planning commissioners, and town council members are now in the process of updating.

“If the general plan dictates general policy, the development code is the town’s regulatory tool,” Town Planner Duane Hall said Wednesday at a meeting of the Truckee Planning Commission.

At the meeting, commissioners considered the scope of work involved in the update, looking at a staff-recommended deadline of April 30, 2008.

Community Development Director John McLaughlin said the work could require at least one additional planning commission meeting per month until completion.

Over the next nine months, the town will tackle updates necessitated by the new general plan, state law, public requests, and basic cleanup ranging from simple to complex, Hall said.

Some of the meatier issues include the town’s new affordable housing policies, the airport land-use compatibility plan, dark sky ordinances, and green building requirements, Hall said.
