Truckee woman accused of embezzling $80,000 pleads not guilty

TAHOE CITY, Calif. and#8212; A Truckee woman accused of embezzling about $80,000 from a private Lake Tahoe construction contractor pleaded not guilty to a felony charge Tuesday morning in Placer County Superior Court.

Dakota Leaves Steel, 30, of Truckee, was arrested Monday, May 2, by Placer County Sheriffand#8217;s Office deputies relating to accusations of felony embezzlement and violation of probation, confirmed Kim Bromley, spokeswoman for PCSO, in an interview Monday.

Steel was on probation stemming from a previous embezzlement charge when the arrest was made, Bromley said. Steel is accused of incrementally siphoning funds from company accounts over a six-month period. Steel was working as a bookkeeper for the contractor since July 2010, Bromley said.

Steel remains in custody at the Tahoe City substation of Placer County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon on $105,000 bail and#8212; $80,000 relating to embezzlement, and $25,000 for violation of probation.

After her plea Tuesday, Steeland#8217;s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, May 12, according to the court calendar.
