TRUCKEE, Calif. — What started with some tools in the back of John Lamoreux’s 1971 El Camino has evolved into a full service automotive repair and maintenance shop, built around the ethics of honesty and professionalism — two traits not often found in the mechanic business.

John’s career in the automotive industry began in a one-bay warehouse on West River Street in 1983. Business grew until he was renting the entire building, working 15 to 18 hours every day, seven days a week, even making house calls. In 2005, John was able to build a state-of-the art facility on Pioneer Trail to help him keep up with the ever-steady flow of vehicles coming to his shop. The Auto Doctor is the only facility with 12 full service bays, and is Truckee’s only AAA-approved auto repair shop.

The Auto Doctor has survived three recessions, but with his continued focus on customer service, honesty and integrity, John’s business has remained at the top in Truckee for more than 30 years.

“The automotive repair industry is a tough one. People aren’t usually happy when they have to come see us. Generally their car is having issues and the day is off to a bad start,” said John. “I have always tried to make the visit to the shop the best I can, being empathetic to their situation. Its not always easy, and sometimes there is just nothing we can do to make this day any better for them, but we sure give it our best. From our great customer service, comfortable waiting room, to several loaner cars or rides to wherever the customer needs to go, when we can, we are on it!”

Truckee visitor Amy Simonds said, “I want to thank you so much for the great service provided by all the folks at the Auto Doctor, especially John Lamoreux and Bob. My 2001 Volvo XC70 motor started to blow up on Donner Summit over Memorial Weekend, and was towed into your place late on Saturday, never to roam the highways again. Your staff helped me at every step with frank and direct information about the situation. Thank you again.”

“Working at the Auto Doctor is an experience that most employees don’t get in there life time of employment,” said Auto Doctor employee Allen Amunson. “The work atmosphere is one that I have never experienced, and makes me excited to show up to work every day. I commute over 60 miles a day to be on the Auto Dr. team and to be part of the experience of sharing the trust that so many Truckee locals share with us … This family atmosphere is one of a kind.”

Giving back

Giving back to community has been a part of John’s success. Several nonprofits John has helped on a long-term basis helps out are Sierra Senior Services, Tahoe SAFE Alliance, and Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

“It’s just what feels right,” said John. “This community has been here for me, it’s the least I can do. A celebration in honor of 30 years, and having the best loyal customers here in Truckee is defiantly in order!”

You will have an opportunity to help in finding a cure for breast cancer by entering the 50/50 raffle. Look for the PINK table. If you attend local events here in Truckee, one of the giveaways is usually free oil changes from The Auto Dr.
