Truckee’s Karen Radebold skates a great race

It’s not called the Great Race for nothing.

Approximately 750 cross-country skiers waxed up Sunday for the Tahoe City to Truckee racing tradition, which has exploded in popularity over the years.

The 30K race began at Lakeview Cross-Country Ski Area and ended at the Cottonwood in Truckee.

Truckee’s Karen Radebold, sponsored by Tahoe Donner and Rossignol, won the women’s division just after taking the President’s Cup at Tahoe Donner last month.

Debbie Hakansson, also of Truckee and sponsored by Tahoe Donner and Rosignol, took second in the women’s and first in the 40-49 age group.

Hakansson won the Great Race in 1997 and twice prior to that, but a broken pole slowed her down this year.

Truckee’s Tim Hill finished third in the 30-39 men’s division and sixth overall in 1:16.01.

Ben Husaby, 32, of Bend, Ore. won the race in 1:12.00.
