Two bodies leave lots of questions

Greg Crofton, Sierra Sun

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE – Robert Barr, a 57-year-old ex-con from Portland, Ore., is the man three boys found decomposing and wearing a tuxedo in a Tahoe Keys’ lagoon early on the evening of April 23.

“We have confirmation, through dental comparison, that the body found in the Tahoe Keys is that of Robert Barr,” said El Dorado County Sgt. Bob Johnston. “He shot himself in the head, if he shot himself. We’re still looking at the totality of the case to decide to if it was self-inflicted or a homicide.”

Johnston said Barr had a bullet hole behind his left ear and that a gun found in the water near his body is the same caliber used to shoot his wife, 45-year-old Rebecca Barr.

A South Lake Tahoe resident found her body shot execution style in a wooded-area near Fallen Leaf Lake March 26. She was identified more than a week later through missing person’s Teletype information and dental comparison.

Johnston said both of the weapons used to kill were 9 mm, but further testing is needed before he knows if the gun is the weapon that killed Rebecca Barr. Those tests are expected to take at least a month.

Even with two bodies and a weapon, the death of both Barrs remains a mystery.

It is known that a car rented in Oregon by the couple was discovered parked April 6 at 1579 Venice Dr., a home across the street from the lagoon where Robert’s body was found.

Also, the Barrs were outfitted in dress clothes when they died. Robert, wearing black cowboy boots and a tuxedo, Rebecca in high-heels and a pinstriped pantsuit. Johnston has said the Barrs left Portland without telling family about the trip.

Two important questions remain. Did Robert Barr, a man who served time in Oregon in 1996 for robbery and being an ex-felon in possession of a gun, shoot his wife, then park their rental car at 1579 Venice Drive and walk into the lagoon across the street from the residence and shoot himself?

Or did someone else murder the Barrs and make it look like a murder-suicide? Johnston has not speculated.

He did say no gunshots have been reported recently in the area of Venice Drive.
