Two murder cases appear in Nevada County Superior Court

Two unrelated murder cases appeared Thursday, Aug. 3, before a Nevada County judge on preliminary matters, with both being advanced to hearings later this month.

Desiree Hayden, 37, is charged in the June 25 death of Brian Sharp, 44.

Robert Lloyd Steuber, 82, faces accusations in connection with the July 18 shooting of Sandra Sue Lebarron, 67.

Both remained held Thursday without bond, authorities said.

Hayden, present in court, entered a not guilty plea. She’s now scheduled for an Aug. 31 felony conference.

“There’s still additional discovery that’s coming in,” said defense attorney D. Laurence Montgomery, who represents Hayden.

Authorities accuse Hayden and an unnamed man of going to Sharp’s Sutton Way apartment, where she allegedly began fighting with Sharp. He died and Hayden fled to Reno, where they arrested her the next day.

The unnamed man played no role in the fight, police said.

Steuber didn’t appear in court on Thursday, though attorneys discussed his case and also set his next hearing for Aug. 31.

Judge Linda Sloven, presiding over both murder cases, noted she had signed a confidential order in Steuber’s case.

Assistant District Attorney Chris Walsh said he couldn’t discuss details about that order, adding that it’s about Steuber’s absence in court.

According to authorities, they arrested Steuber after an argument between himself and Lebarron at their Penn Valley home. During the argument Steuber, in a wheelchair, left to retrieve a handgun. He then returned to Lebarron and allegedly shot her multiple times.
