Typically a brown paper bag is headwear reserved for fans of sub-par sports teams.

But comedian Murray Langston has been sporting the unusual cranium accessory for more than 30 years as The Unknown Comic. The bag gag started during a performance on the “The Gong Show,” according to promoters of an upcoming Langston performance at Crystal Bay Casino, at Lake Tahoe’s North Shore.

“When Murray performed on the ‘Gong Show’ he decided to place a paper bag over his head to hide his identity,” according to a press release from promoters of the performance. “On his first appearance, he asked the host Chuck Barris if he ever made love to his wife in the shower. When Chuck said, ‘NO!’ The Unknown Comic replied, ‘Well, you should, she loves it.’”

Barris loved the joke, and “The Unknown Comic” was born, according to the release.

Langston went on to perform on more than 150 episodes of the TV show and in more than 20 movies, according to the release. He has also co-headlined with Melissa Manchester, Lola Falana, Helen Reddy, Robert Goulet, Andy Williams and Gladys Knight.
